The Walk: Distance and Duration

0.7 km Return walk

30 min Approx. return time

The track is approximately 350 metres each way, with the Department of Conservation listing around 15 minutes for the climb. Allow about 30 minutes return, or 45–60 minutes if you want time for photographs and a relaxed look around.

The Experience: Unforgettable Coastal Adventure

The adventure begins with a boat journey through the Bay of Islands, where forested islands and sheltered coves dot the horizon. Once ashore at Twin Lagoon Bay, follow the marked trail uphill towards the former Māori pā.

The climb is brief but can be steep, particularly on the stairs near the top. Then the landscape opens into a spectacular panorama of the two lagoons, coastline and surrounding islands.

After the walk, head back to the beach to relax or, when conditions allow, enjoy a swim or snorkel. The island also has significant Māori history: Captain James Cook landed here in 1769, and the region received the name Bay of Islands during his voyage.
