Auckland
Omeru Reserve
Quick Facts
Location: 1890 Kaipara Coast Highway, Kaukapakapa, Auckland 0984
The reserve lies about 5 km north of Kaukapakapa on SH16.
Parking is right off the highway, with a gravel car park and access track.
Facilities: Toilets (a short walk from the carpark) and a picnic area.
Reserve is managed by Auckland Council and dogs must be on a leash (unless signage indicates otherwise).
The Walk: Distance and Duration
The main walk is straightforward: about 10 minutes (return) from the carpark down to the base of the main falls.
More ambitiously, a 30-40 minute circuit will take you past multiple waterfalls (Omeru Falls, Waitangi Stream Cascade, and Waitangi Falls) along side streams and ridgelines.
Estimated around 700 metres one way via the informal path (i.e. ~1.4 km return).
The falls heights: the main Omeru Falls is about 5 m high.
Waitangi Falls is about 7 m high and lies further along a rougher path.
The Experience: Hidden Falls & Water Stream
Omeru Reserve might not be a showpiece like big national parks or grand waterfalls, but that's part of its charm.
Compact nature walk that doesn’t demand hours or intense effort
Mix of forest, streams, waterfalls and a pā remnant
Quiet escape not far from Auckland
Opportunities for photography, short bush time and nature breathing space
If you’re in West Auckland or passing along SH16 and want a refreshing stop, Omeru Reserve is a lovely option.
Reviews and Local Impressions
“Hidden waterfalls” – multiple lesser-known falls tucked in among the forest.
Good for family walks (though parts are steep) and dog-walks.
Scenic, peaceful, green — a nice nature escape near the city.
Advice:
Some paths (especially toward Waitangi Falls) are rough, steep, and muddy when wet.
Mobile phone signal may be weak or non-existent in parts of the track.
Final Words
If you're looking for a quiet, scenic escape not too far from Auckland, Omeru Scenic Reserve (aka Omeru Reserve / Omeru Falls) is a lovely option.
Tucked along State Highway 16 between Kumeu and Wellsford, this little nature gem combines forest, streams, a historic pā site and a trio of waterfalls.
